Dr. Laura Beck, Neurologic Physical Therapist in Pinehurst, North Carolina

Hi, I'm Dr. Laura Beck

This is my Story

In my 20’s and early 30’s I had been feeling far less than stellar with my own health issues. I was experiencing fluctuating energy, mood, and weight, and had autoimmunity. Eating colorful, anti-inflammatory foods (and avoiding those to which I was sensitive), the right dose of exercise, and prioritizing stress resilience, sleep, community, and joy have been among the keys to getting my own health back on track (and keeping it there).

While I was using lifestyle to improve my own health, many of my clients with Parkinson’s were not feeling their best. It is difficult to participate in PD-specific high-intensity exercise if you are constantly running low on energy! Many clients were actively seeking guidance from their healthcare team on nutrition and lifestyle for helping to manage Parkinson's symptoms and other comorbidities, but they kept coming up short.

As a Neurologic Physical Therapist with personal experience using lifestyle to improve my own health, I already had much more to offer alongside exercise to help my clients with PD make a positive shift in their health. To serve my clients even better, I went back to graduate school to study Nutrition and Integrative Health and participated in an 18-month clinical nutrition residency working primarily with clients with PD. During that time, we found that following a comprehensive, individualized lifestyle approach utilizing nutrition, exercise, targeted supplements, stress resilience and sleep support helped many clients with PD better manage symptoms and build whole-body health. Clients regularly reported improvements in energy, pain, sleep, mood, GI function, and vitality. These first clients showed me what is possible, and now I am on a mission to serve an even greater number of people living with PD using exercise, nutrition, and other lifestyle tools so they can build health, too.

Outside of the clinic, I can usually be found putting lifestyle tools into practice in my own life. For stress resilience, mood, and cognitive health, I start each day with Kundalini yoga and meditation and a big cup of black coffee! I love to cook colorful, nutrient packed meals featuring an abundance of veggies, herbs, and spices. On weekends, I hike in the longleaf pine forests of the NC Sandhills with my wildlife biologist husband, Brady, and redbone coonhound, Maddie. I am the aunt of 7 boys in total (!!!). I love going back home to Upstate NY to celebrate the summer birthdays of the youngest nephews, and for a bit of snow at the holidays.
